* First Bible Stories – John Dillow
• Visual Aids – 10 pictures of the story
• Water, bowl, towels, flannel to wash feet
• Crackers, and juice to share
• Worksheets

1) Introduction
today’s story is about the events that led up to Jesus’ arrest. There are three main parts; what Judas Iscariot did, What happened when Jesus and the disciples had their last meal together. What
happened in the garden of Gethsemane.

 

2) Story
1. Judas meets the priests and is paid 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus
2. Jesus and his 12 disciples meet for the Passover meal.
3. Jesus washes his disciples feet
4. Jesus says one of them will betray him
5. Jesus shares bread and wine with his disciples
6. In Gethsemane Jesus tells Peter he will deny him three times before the cock crows
7. Jesus asks the disciples three times to stay awake while he prays, but they fall asleep each time
8. Jesus prays that if possible that he can be saved from death, but he will do God’s will
9. Judas betrays Jesus with a kiss and he is arrested


3) Questions
1. How much was Judas Iscariot paid by the priests? – 30 pieces of silver
2. What had the disciples been quarreling about? – Who is the greatest among them
3. What did Jesus do? – He washed the disciples feet
4. What did Jesus say? – “Whoever wants to be great in the Kingdom of God, must learn how to serve others, as I am serving you.”
5. What did Jesus do with the bread and wine? – He broke the bread, ate a piece and shared it with his disciples. He then shared the wine. He said the bread was his body and the wine his blood.
They should do this after he has died in remembrance of him. This is now practiced in Christian churches and is called Holy Communion.
6. Who went with Jesus to the garden of Gethsemane? – Peter, James and John
7. What did Jesus tell Peter? – You will deny me three times before the cock crows
8. What did Jesus ask for in prayer? – “If it is possible, save me from death, but only if it is your  will.”
9. How did Judas betray Jesus? – with a kiss
10.What happened to the servant’s ear? – Peter cut it off with a sword. Jesus healed it.

Throughout this time, Jesus kept a calm and humble attitude. Even though he knew he would die he continued giving love to his disciples. He showed this by washing his disciples feet. He showed it when breaking the bread and wine. He showed it when healing the servant’s ear. And he showed it towards Judas. He didn’t accuse him or any of those who arrested him.


4) Activities
* Retell the story and put pictures in the correct order
* Re-enact the sharing of bread and wine, using wafers and juice
* Re-enact washing the disciples feet to develop an attitude of service and humility.
