1) Introduction
* Remind the children that in a family we should love each other; parents and children, mummy and daddy and brothers and sisters
* Today’s lesson is about an older and younger brother. Ask how many brothers and sisters they have in their family. Who is the oldest? Who is the youngest? Would they like to be the oldest? Do they like being the youngest? Which is better? Are you friends with your brothers and sisters? Do you fight sometimes? Today’s story is about two brothers and how they learn to love each other.
2) Story
The is a universal story of the good sibling and the bad sibling. in which goodness is rewarded and cruelty punished. When their father dies, elder brother Nolbu, greedy and mean-spirited, inherits the family property and banishes big-hearted younger brother Hungbu, his wife and three children. Hungbu’s situation doesn’t change his generous nature, and when he shows kindness to a tiny injured swallow, he is magically rewarded with great prosperity. Envious Nolbu seeks out the same good fortune and injures a bird so that he can nurse it back to health to get the reward.
Instead he is punished by evil spirits and howling demons who destroy his own home. He falls weeping into his good brother’s arms. Hungbu, forgiving, takes in Nolbu, who mends his ways and afterwards they all live together in peace and harmony. The story teaches us that generosity triumphs as meanness is punished.
3) Discussion
* What good things did the Hungbu, the younger brother do?
He cared for insects. He didn’t want to walk on caterpillars and beetles.
He gave food to hungry children.
He respected his father and older brother.
He took the blame for his brothers wrongdoings.
He worked hard
He took care of a bird with a broken wing.
He forgave his brother’s wrongdoings.
* What was his reward?
He received a great fortune – money, food, a big house and many servants
* What bad things did the Nolbu, the older brother do?
He pulled wings off butterflies
He trampled vegetables in his neighbour’s garden
He was greedy
He laughed at poor and hungry people
He was lazy
He mistreated his younger brother by sending him away.
He deliberately broke a bird’s wings.
* What was his punishment?
Evil spirits destroyed his home. Through this he realized that his misfortune was due to his cruel ways, and he begged for forgiveness. As a result his heart completely changed.
* What can we learn from the story?
When we do good things we are rewarded. When we do bad things we are punished. Brothers and sisters must help each other to be good, then they can be happy together. If others are bad, but we are good, in the end things will be better.
4) Activities
* Use picture cards from the book. Ask the children to put them in the correct order.
* Lay the cards on a table for the children to look at for one minute. Cover them with a cloth and take one or two away. Can they say which ones are missing? Repeat.
* Play the memory game
*Act out the story to show the good things Hungbu did and the good things he received and the bad things Nolbu did and the bad things he received.
