  1. Validation: Release the energy they are struggling with by saying “It’s OK, It’s understandable that you feel this way given the circumstance.” 
  2. Clarify what they want: What are the main issues, what do they focus on?
  3. What’s the next step: What could you do to make that happen?
  4. Accountability: When would you like to take that next step? How would you like to let me know when you are able to do that?
